According to this about 5,000. However the study was done several years ago and doesn't include surgeons with less than 2 years out of rez, so I'd imagine the real number is closer to 5,500 today. It's a medical specialty with one of the lowest per capita ratios for sure, probably behind only dermatology and neurosurg.EDIT: sorry, just realized I didn't paste the link for the survey I referred to.
