How long does it take for a cavity to form?

When can it be first detected?
Answer:
It can be pretty quick depending on what eating, drinking and dental homecare habits you have. I typically take x-rays on my patients every 12 to 18 months to check for cavities. I have however seen patients that ate alot of altoid candies that got cavities quick. Each time you eat something with sugar in it and your mouth breaks it down you have acid in your mouth for about 20 minutes. If you eat 1 altoid (or sip soda)every 1/2 hour it means you could have 40 minutes of acid eating your teeth for each hour. That can bring on cavities quick!
Hope that helps!

There acute, it just happend you can catch them when there very small. By you, i mean the dentist. There's no guideline except to good oral hyigene to avoid cavities. Its not like if you dont brush with 3 days you get a cavity.
